Thankfully, James managed to talk some sense into Millicent, but she wasnât fully recovered. Every time she looked at me, her eyes were apologetic. Hopefully it wouldnât last long because it would drive me crazy. Sheâd look at me like that and Iâd feel compelled to tell her it was fine. I guessed whatever it took to make her feel better, and if that meant I was telling her for the next few months, well, so be it.
James had okayed me calling Mr Sorokin, the father of one of Tommyâs victims. Alena had been an agent, yet sheâd succumbed to his attack. Killing the vampire witch had come with a huge thank you and an offer that if I ever needed him, heâd be there to help. I wasnât sure exactly what he did. I think someone had mentioned something about owning a successful business, and I didnât think he was into anything criminal, but I got the feeling he commanded respect and people would do anything for him. Which meant he probably had strong witches on hand to protect his stuff. Heâd promptly answered my call and was now sitting on Jamesâs couch, a cup of tea in hand.
Iâd just finished giving him a rough rundown. I didnât want to tell him everything, of course. He also let James ask him a couple of questions and judge his honesty. If James was happy, I was happy. I drained my cappuccino and magicked the cup away. âSo, these are the proceeds of crime, and weâll need them for evidence later, but we know the people we stole them from want them back. And we donât want to store them at head office becauseâ¦.â Gah, how to say it without insulting the PIB, seeing as how his good friend was one of the directors.
He smiled. âSay no more, Miss Bianchi. I have somewhere very safe to store your goods. We have the latest non-witch tech, and I have a security department of witches that rivals the worldâs best. If anyone tries to steal these goods, theyâll get a nasty surprise.â He laughed. Hmm, seemed he had a similar sense of humour to Angelica.
âThank you so, so much, Mr Sorokin.â
He waved a dismissive hand. âNo. How many times do I have to tell you; call me Maxim.â
I smiled. âOnly if you call me Lily.â
He tipped his chin up. âOkay. Itâs a deal.â He held out his hand, and we shook on it.
âAgent Blakesley, Will, will be in touch tomorrow, and you can discuss where youâll be moving everything to.â
âExcellent.â He drained the last sip of his tea and turned to Millicent. âThank you, Mrs Bianchi.â
She smiled, albeit it gingerly. âMy pleasure, Maxim.â
Maxim stood, as did we all. James held out his hand to shake Maximâs. âThanks again. Youâre saving our skin. Resources are rather limited at the moment.â
He frowned. âSo Iâve heard. In any case, lucky youâre on the job.â
James cleared his throat. âIâm not, actually. Iâm doing this in my spare time.
